About Boston

Few if any cities in the United States have managed to interweave the creation of a modern metropolis with sites of such great historical significance as has Boston, Massachusetts. Amid skyscrapers such as the John Hancock Tower and the Prudential Tower are centuries-old landmarks that tell the story of the nation’s founding. City officials have pulled off the challenging task of building for the future while simultaneously preserving the past.

One of the oldest cities in the country, Boston was the site of major American Revolutionary War events such as the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre. Today, it remains one of the largest metropolitan areas in the northeast, and is one of the top 10 metropolitan markets in the U.S.

Still, Boston is relatively small by big-city standards – it covers only 89.6 square miles, nearly half of which is water – but in that area it packs a myriad of attractions that continue to make it a popular vacation destination as well as a highly desired place to live. With four professional sports teams – Red Sox (baseball), Bruins (hockey) and Celtics (basketball), as well as the New England Patriots, who play football in nearby Foxboro – Boston is typically considered one of the best sports towns in America.

Its downtown area epitomizes modern day American urban life, with a vibrant nightlife scene, thriving theater district, unique shopping and widespread green spaces. In fact, the Boston Common, a 50-acre stretch of land that borders some of the city's best-known streets such as Beacon, Boylston and Charles streets, is among the best-known public parks anywhere. Shopping opportunities in downtown Boston include the popular Downtown Crossing, a district near the Common that includes large department stores, restaurants and souvenir outlets, and the Faneuil Hall Marketplace, a unique shopping and dining strip set in one of Boston's historic treasures.

And no trip to Boston would be complete without a visit to Boston Harbor. The historic bay, along with the winding Charles River that curls through the city, give travelers yet another reason to visit Boston. Seaside lobster houses and bars overlooking the harbor are numerous, making for spectacular summer evenings dining outdoors. And a horse drawn carriage ride through the city's narrow roads is the perfect way to cap a busy afternoon of sightseeing.
